Fiber supplements are off the leash in 2022. And no wonder; they have the ultimate secret people and their guts crave – psyllium husk.

But before diving into all the constructed tittle-tattle about two popular health and wellness brands, let’s quickly remember why we came here in the first place.

Because we’re constipated

And no, no hidden idioms or metaphors here. Gastrointestinal problems are exhausting and affect over 62 million US citizens each year. And this burden spreads like wildfire into extreme categories: from hemorrhoids and severe constipation to flatulence/bloating and IBS.

Painful bowel movements can be the least of your worries. Complications can lead to obesity, anxiety, and nasty intestinal conditions. Overall, constipation is a sign that there’s something wrong with your gut microbiota.

Who’s guilty here? It differs. But it’s undeniably true that unhealthy diets, eating patterns, processed foods, lack of physical activity, maybe some allergies, and sensitivities to foods put the cherry on top. What’s comforting is that these tummy issues are quite common and normal, so you’re not alone.

There are tons of home remedies, spells, healthy alternatives, and options to cure that stressed-out gut. To get rid of or soothe the symptoms of unwanted digestive issues, people choose from drastically changing their food plates to lifting weights and cardio. Or boost their daily routine with an extra sprinkle of fiber. That’s where fiber supplements shine through, and there are 2 particular brands that claim to beat bloating, constipation and reach the desired body/health goals by… pooping!

One dedicated content creator decided to be a “test bunny” and experience the effect of ColonBroom and Metamucil:

Colonbroom and metamucil
Healthinsider.news picture

“Ok, so I’ve decided to try these two gut-cleansing products that are doppelganging each other in the market, and I’m going to give you an honest review.

They should both taste very different, their branding is totally different too, but the point is they market this as an all-in-one healthy gut drink that beats constipation + bloating + detoxes the body + flushes excess nasty water waste.

So I’m going to drink both of them today to test and see how I feel + analyze the texture and ingredients.

Why am I doing this? Because I can.

And because I’m constipated-curious.

Also, I like to start my day fresh, with a boost of energy, trying to keep my diet as healthy as possible. It’s a challenge, that’s why I’m looking for an easy way to help me get through that clogged-up feeling.”

The goal seems pretty normal and plausible, right? Who doesn’t want to enjoy a clean, healthy gut and eat what they want without any potential risks to their health? Still, there are many factors to consider before deciding to buy a specific product.

To check how ColonBroom and Metamucil work and whether they are worth a try, we considered 4 essential elements for testing their potency: ingredients, taste, results, and price

ColonBroom – what is it?

ColonBroom is an organic supplement that relieves constipation and diarrhea. This fiber-based supplement comes in powder form that you can mix with water to drink. It will help eliminate toxins from your body and promote regular bowel movements. This product is claimed to help suppress your appetite, lower blood sugar levels, improve skin health, and lift your mood. Some of the key benefits of ColonBroom supplements are:

  • Body detox The unique complex of essential ingredients in ColonBroom works to improve your body’s detoxification processes by cleansing the gut and eliminating accumulated toxins.
  • Appetite suppression – The main active ingredient in ColonBroom – psyllium husk, an all-natural, bulk-forming laxative – improves gut microbiota, digestive system and cleanses the body.
  • Improved overall health Combining ColonBroom with a healthy gut diet will improve your overall health, increase your energy levels, and may reduce symptoms of bloating.
  • Psyllium husk as one of the main ingredients Derived from Plantago ovata plant’s seeds, psyllium husk is a type of fiber that absorbs water and becomes a viscous compound that benefits constipation, diarrhea, and blood pressure.

Metamucil – what is it?

Probably the most popular fiber supplement in the market. A lot of people gravitate towards it because it’s sugar-free. Metamucil is a bulk-forming fiber laxative used to treat occasional constipation or intestinal irregularity. Metamucil may also lower cholesterol when used together with low cholesterol and saturated fat diet. It increases the bulk of your stool, making your bowel movements regular. It also increases the water levels in the stool, making the stool softer and easier to pass. Just like ColonBroom, Metamucil contains psyllium husk, another benefit to its efficiency.

Some of the benefits* of Metamucil include:

  • May help relieve occasional constipation.
  • Can improve bowel irregularity.
  • Has cholesterol-lowering properties, particularly when used with a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat, and may be used to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
  • May be used as a dietary fiber supplement.
  • Psyllium husk is one of the main ingredients.

*All the information above was taken from product reviews and official brand web pages.

ColonBroom vs Metamucil ingredients

We often jump into testing the product with just one main ingredient in mind. “Oh, it has tons of vitamin C, right on!” or “Lots of protein? Just what I need for my diet!” Every micronutrient matters. Not because we’re trying to educate ourselves and cramp the brain capacity with all medical receipts and unnecessary info. There are various cases where people live with medical needs, so knowing thoroughly WHAT you use is a big deal.

Let’s take a look at the first element we’ve investigated while comparing both products.

ColonBroom ingredients

Psyllium husk powder

Psyllium is a soluble fiber that absorbs water in the whole gut system and turns into a thick, gel-like substance that increases the size/softness of stools for a smooth bowel journey. As a matter of fact, psyllium husk not only treats constipation but is also effective for combating liquid diarrheal stools and beating bloating or painful flatulence. In short, it’s a life-changing gut-saver that will make you regular and happy in a whisk.

Crystallized lemon

Crystallized lemon (in other words – citric acid) is often found in natural flavoring to give that zesty, citric boost, and tangier feel. It also has a positive impact on constipation and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities.

Sea salt and silicon dioxide

Sea salt undeniably has a big impact on health. Using salt in moderation can increase hydration. Not only hydration, but it can also support kidney detoxification.

And silicon dioxide? There’s just a tiny particle of it, nothing seriously chemical. It’s for building and keeping the substance fresh and not expired.

Stevia

Most products are filled with artificial sweeteners, which can potentially have some negative side effects on health. On a good note, ColonBroom uses stevia to give that natural sweet taste. And it is known that stevia can promote lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

ColonBroom supplement facts

Aside from the main ingredients, ColonBroom contains small amounts of calcium, potassium, sodium, has 20 calories (note that we count everything per one serving/ scoop), and 5g of fiber. In one container, there are 60 servings, meaning you can use it for 2 months once a day or boost the portion for up to two shakes a day, leaving you one wholesome month of cleansed colon.

Metamucil ingredients

Same as ColonBroom, Metamucil’s main motherload is psyllium husk.

Aspartame and Yellow 6

Aspartame and Yellow 6 are controversial food additives known to possibly exert some negative health effects; however, scientific evidence is inconclusive, and no definitive conclusions can be made. Aspartame is another word for NutraSweet – it’s fake sugar.

Maltodextrin in Metamucil is another ingredient that is used as a food additive to give viscosity/body to the product and thus improve its texture and mouthfeel. However, maltodextrin has a high glycaemic index value of 85–105, which can cause sharp increases in blood glucose upon ingestion and be potentially harmful to people with diabetes.

Sucralose

Weirdly enough, sugar is one of the triggers that cause constipation. Having one sugary-laxative drink a day to beat constipation? Please, connect the dots… But without ramming on the list of ingredients, it’s good to know that Metamucil has sugar-free options to choose from, yet, they use sucralose to give that sweetness.

Metamucil supplement facts

Aside from the main ingredients, Metamucil contains small amounts of iron, potassium, sodium, has 15 calories (note that we count everything per one serving/teaspoon), and 5g of fiber. In one container, there are 180 servings, meaning you can use it for 6 months one serving a day, or 3 months two servings a day.

ColonBroom vs Metamucil taste

Team strawberry or team orange?

From the first glance, ColonBroom and Metamucil look identical.

To be honest, no one should care how the powder looks since the main component of the drink is water. Approximately 8oz of water but you can easily mix it with more (the more, the better as water is a key point to bulking that stool and letting it go through). Hoop one scoop of these supplements, stir it up really well. The reason why we highlight the stirring process is because you don’t want to have chalky clumps while you’re drinking.

Team Orange – Metamucil. The “fine dust” mixes well easily and quickly. Following that, there’s no clunkiness or grittiness in the mouth, and the aftertaste just gives that simple, light orange soda-pop-like feeling. But not too strong, though. The more water you mix it with, the blander the taste, but let’s remember that we’re here to evaluate the results and see if the product works.

Team Strawberry – ColonBroom. In the container, there is already a hidden scoop that automatically measures the daily fiber dosage you need. Stirring requires a little bit more muscle work than usual, but in the end, you should get a thick, bright beetroot color. The same rule follows – minimum 8oz of water. Don’t be blown away by the flavorsome strawberry punch – the first sip is delicious.

Tip: Aim to drink smoothies as fast as you can. Why? Psyllium husk (fiber) quickly reacts with water by forming into this gel-sponge substance. This gloop provides bulk as well as lubrication and hydration to the intestines. But if  you leave it for too long, you might not enjoy the experience or taste…

Now let’s move on to the third factor and see whether ColonBroom and Metamucil actually work.

Colonbroom and metamucil

Results

If we’d check the ColonBroom bottle, we could find their slogan:

“Natural way to help get rid of unwanted bloating.”

On the Metamucil batch, you can see bullet points that say:

“Psyllium fiber supplement that helps support:

  • Appetite control
  • Heart health by lowering cholesterol
  • Healthy blood sugar levels
  • Digestive health”

These phrases are printed black on white on the containers. But is it just a form of laxative, or do they really have hidden health benefits, such as body detox, natural colon cleanse, energy boosts, and improved sleep?

We will summarize both of the results of the supplements since we’re focusing more on the taste, texture, and price criteria.

Customer reviews spill the tea that you can feel the first results and difference in your bowel movements after 12 hours. Results may differ, depending on your eating habits, gut issues, hydration, or physical activity level. Nevertheless, you should feel eased or have no symptoms of bloating, constipation, or flatulence.

Any change to your diet forces a change in your gut microbiome. Give yourself some time to adjust. Whole populations of bacteria are dying off, and new ones are becoming more prevalent. It’s normal that the first days can be hard, and you may feel side effects such as light inflammation, rumbling in your stomach, a little bit of bloating. That’s your gut trying to adjust to the infused fiber dose. After a couple of days, you should feel better and, later on, double the daily intake for better results.

But what results are we talking about?

Lightness in your gut. Increased fiber intake undeniably benefits your gut. Therefore, drinking fiber supplements consistently will give you this “lightness” and easiness like you’re walking on a cloud.

Regular bowel movements. There’s no better feeling than discharging all the nasty excess waste that was built up throughout the day. For some, it takes 2–3 days; others reach the wanted results after a week or so.

Your gut bacteria helps you lose weight by helping your metabolism and taking some of the calories you eat for themselves. A healthy, rich gut microbiome needs fuel too. So if you eat the right foods, they’ll help out your weight loss journey by consuming parts of what you eat for yourself. Meanwhile, other bacteria that break down starches are going to produce tons of sugar which will make you more resistant to weight loss. The problem is that this imbalance can spin out of control really badly. To prevent that, you need fiber supplements that can add all the fiber your body needs back into your diet.

Amazing mood and energy boost. Dietary fiber is linked to improving mood – thanks to the so-called Gut-Brain-Axis. Since fiber cleanses you out and puts your gut microbiota back to the safe zone, you will notice that there’s no sluggishness, apathy, or moodiness. All these sayings “gut feeling” and “butterflies in my stomach” actually make sense!

Improved digestive system. Three times yes. Both of these supplements will give you the instant gut boost in the least painful way. Fiber binds to water while passing through the digestive tract, which improves the frequency and density of bowel movements. This decreases the risk of digestive disorders. We can call it the indigestible matter in food that clumps together throughout the digestive process, collecting other digestible material that isn’t “coming out.”

Add these tips to your diet:

As we see, both ColonBroom and Metamucil have the same working mechanism. To make those results pop, our advice is:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Increase the fiber content in your diet. There’s no point taking supplements if you’re going to have a breakfast burrito.

Are ColonBroom and Metamucil worth the money?

Let’s all agree that price plays a huge role when investing in your health. People don’t want to be scammed. People want to purchase a good quality product that does its job.

Metamucil prices range from $13 up to $35.99. Since there’s a huge assortment varying from gummies to powder to 60 teaspoons to 180 servings – it’s up to you to choose. You can purchase it at Target, Walmart, or Amazon.

ColonBroom is sold by bottles based on subscription form:

1-month supply = $52.65 / per bottle

3-month supply = $35.99 / per bottle

6-month supply = $27.99 / per bottle

This container tested for this review was $52.65. You can purchase ColonBroom at their official website and Amazon. You may see prices marked in euros, that is because ColonBroom has spread its market into some European countries.

Final thoughts on ColonBroom vs Metamucil

We want to have a good, blessed, clean, fresh, productive day. And if we are stuck, it’s no fun. So, there’s no shame talking about it. If you feel embarrassed – you shouldn’t!

We’re here to just give an honest review and to spit brutal facts because there’s tons of information out there. And, of course, it’s obvious that some of you might get triggered or misinformed. Different people, different opinions.

So here’s our final verdict:

Both of them do the trick.

Both of them give good results.

Ingredient-wise, these supplements slightly differ. For those who pay attention to the difference between sucralose and stevia, or even powder flavor, the whole information is written on supplement facts. ColonBroom uses stevia and strawberry flavonoid; Metamucil has this orange mark and uses sucralose (there are sugar-free options too). Remember that no matter the additives, you may feel a little specific, synthetic aftertaste.

If you have problems with flatulence, gassy passes, or if you want to have that fresh, circulating system going on, trying these supplements will do no harm. It’s a good way to start because these are not over-the-counter meds.

Of course, one tricky thing about fiber supplements (and fiber-rich foods in general!) – do not overuse them. Finding that balance is key, and everything is up to you because we’re all different: different palates, different priorities and pain points, and it’s perfectly normal.

Take gut health into your own hands!
