5 Hair Loss Mistakes To Avoid For People Over 40

Hair loss is a very touchy subject and it’s never easy going through it. 

Our hair is very personal to us and brings a strong sense of pride and joy. 

I’m writing this to you as a doctor specializing in hair and scalp treatments from my years of experience. 

And through my practice, I’ve seen countless people repeat the same hair loss mistakes.

Mistake #1 – Using Hair Products Containing Harsh Ingredients 

Shampooing your hair is an important thing to stay consistent with, even with hair loss. 

But you need to be cautious of what products you are using.

Most store-bought shampoos are notorious for being packed with synthetic chemicals like: 

  • Phthalates/fragrance
  • Sulfates 
  • Silicone 
  • Parabens 
  • Formaldehyde 
  • Triclosan 
  • Dimethicone 
  • Alcohol 
  • Salts of any kind

These ingredients strip the oils & moisture away from your hair, affecting your scalp’s normal function, and intensifying hair loss. 

Some products even coat & harden around your cuticles, preventing precious moisture from entering the hair and making it undernourished & brittle.

In more serious cases, the build-up will clog up the cuticle and cause hair to break and fall off. 

Imagine exposing your scalp & follicles to these chemicals on a daily basis. 

My personal advice: 

If you’ve been using harsh products for a while, it’s likely your scalp is already aggravated. So if you’re looking to make an active switch of hair products – be patient. 

And get on the lookout for products that do not contain the mentioned toxic chemicals. 

Mistake #2 – Being Too Rough With Your Hair

If you notice more and more loose hair stuck in the shower drain, then this might be a strong factor. 

The top mistakes are made when drying your hair. 

First is blow drying your hair with too much heat, damaging your already thin strands of hair. 

Another is towel drying your hair too roughly. Remember your hair is most fragile when it is dripping wet! 

My advice: 

Start shopping for a blow dryer with a cool or neutral temperature setting. You can even find ones that are designed for curly hair types. These dryers reduce hair damage by a large amount. 

As for towel drying, invest in a high-quality towel made with gentle material. These towels decrease a lot of the friction created with drying. 

Mistake #3 – Giving Up 

When the first signs of hair loss start to set in, all your hair strands start getting weaker & more fragile. 

Which can lead to more damage over time. 

And while going through this, it’s understandable to start getting more skeptical. Or being doubtful of any chance of recovery. 

Especially if you’ve been trying more products & solutions than you can count – and having them failing you.  

My advice: 

Of course, the earlier you are able to address hair loss, the better. But if you have been dealing with hair loss for a while, it is still possible for you to regain a new head of hair. 

Giving up is not the answer. 

It’s going to take a little more time but change is still possible. 

All my successful patients who rescued their thinning hair were struggling for years trying out various solutions that didn’t work. This is exactly why I’m sharing these lessons with you.

Mistake #4 – Not Giving It Time

Before you go on to try something drastic like hair replacement surgery. Remember that trying to regrow your hair takes time. 

It is a gradual, progressive process. 

And there are a few problems with drastic solutions. One of them is that it’s never easy trying to hide it from your friends & colleagues. There’s also the risk of not knowing if the end result will actually look good. 

And the chance of hair loss coming back will still haunt you because you haven’t dealt with the real root cause of it. 

You’re only slapping a temporary band-aid on the problem. 

The road to restoring a whole head of hair that’s once more full of luster & vigor requires a lot of patience. 

My advice: 

You might start to think you’re looking older or that you’re less attractive. Along with many other negative thoughts. 

Let me tell you that it’s perfectly okay to have these thoughts, but do not give these thoughts any attention. 

You want to spend most of your time focusing on the thought of success and regaining a thick head of hair. 

You can do this by taking a few minutes from your day to visualize yourself making progress with your hair growth each day. 

This might seem a little unorthodox, but the practice actually has merit. Your body has actual, physical responses to what you focus on mentally – so remember to stay positive!  

Mistake #5 – Incomplete Treatment Plans

Of all the things you see on this list, this is the biggest mistake of them all. 

It doesn’t matter what you try – DHT blockers, foam shampoos, minoxidil, creams, hair masks, or supplements… 

But the truth is that 99% of the solutions available out there will not work.  

Sure, there will always be a lucky minority who will find success but they are the extreme exception. 

The problem is that these solutions only focus on solving 1-2% of the true cause of your hair loss. The reality is you would need to easily spend over $5,000 on many individual solutions to find any real success.
