Managing PCOS: How I Stopped Gaining and Lost Pounds (Naturally) in 2 Easy Steps

I’ll start by saying that I grew up in a fatphobic family, and my parents were consistently derogatory about my aunt’s looks.

She was obese, had PCOS, and unfortunately died of bowel cancer in her early 60s. Her death was clearly related to her weight, and at the time, I was just sad that my dad couldn’t even have a funeral for her without commenting on her size in the pictures. 

I was a tall and slender young woman at the time, so the weight was not an issue for me, but the fear of gaining was already instilled deep inside my brain.

I was prescribed Metformin soon after. My weight was still within the normal range at the time, but I knew exactly what was about to happen.

I gained 40 lbs without changing my diet

I couldn’t accept myself so big. The rolls, the floppiness, the belly sticking out… But the worst was realizing I did nothing to gain weight, and trying to lose it felt impossible.

I was so embarrassed by the way I looked I had to stop seeing my family. They weren’t saying anything straight to my face, but I knew what they were thinking, and that made me extremely anxious and even depressed.

I’m a fighter. I did keto for a while, which seemed promising at first, but the fact that I had to restrict so many foods I loved was unbearable. I wasn’t used to depriving myself.
