Spring is a great time to build a summer body.
With so many diets out there, which one could bring you the best results?
Having recently discovered Keto I set out on a mission to document my journey for my readers to see whether it lives up to the hype.
Below you’ll get to learn more about my plan including what I used to keep me on track and some key final takeaways from my keto weight loss journey.
Weight was personally never an issue for me until I started to creep into my mid 30s.
Being a health & wellness coach I always maintained a healthy diet with regular exercise, however, my metabolism has slowed down considerably as I got older which made it difficult for me to work on my summer body over the winter months and achieve similar results to what I was used to getting.
This year was much more difficult as reducing my calories simply wasn’t enough.
Nothing worked for me
Being a health and wellness coach I have experimented with some other types of diets in the past, so I had a general idea on what worked and what didn’t.
Most diets were hard to maintain and resulted in the wrong kind of weight loss, such as that through water and muscle, meaning I’d look the same even though I’d technically lost “weight”. Some of the diets I tried included;
– The Atkins Diet
– The Paleo Diet
– The Whole 30 Diet
These diets may have got some amazing results for some, however personally these diets weren’t effective for me in the long run and actually resulted in me gaining more weight than I initially started with.
However, I didn’t let these failed attempts deter me on my path to getting that “summer body” and maintained a positive mindset.
A friend told me about Keto
I started to look for ways in which I could drop weight without reducing my calories and exhausting myself on the treadmill, especially in time for summer where I could show off the summer body that I had worked on during the winter months.
I came across an Instagram post of a dear friend of mine who had recently posted a before and after photo on how she had lost weight following a Keto diet plan. I contacted her to find out more about how she achieved her results.
She explained how she used an app called KetoCycle that gave her a personalised meal plan to follow which made it easier for her to stick to the diet.
So what is the Keto diet?
Keto being short for ketogenic, the diet focusses on consuming very little carbohydrates and drastically increasing fat within your diet. This then leads to a metabolic change within your body into a state known as “ketosis”.
When in Ketosis the body is optimised to burn fat over carbohydrates and may also have some other health benefits As stated on the popular health site healthline such as;
“Significant reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, has some health benefits”
How I started
My initial goal was to lose a healthy weight of around 2lbs a week which would result in around 8lb lost at the end of the month.
I started by first contacting my friend, who then sent more information on what she did to achieve her results so that I could also use this to help me on my personal keto weight loss journey.
She went on to explain that she used an app called KetoCycle where she initially filled in a questionnaire in order to get a personalised meal plan. She then went on to tell me that the app did most of the legwork for her when it came to planning meals and knowing exactly how many grams of fat and carbs to consume.
Being as lazy as I am, I thought I’d do the same as it would save me a lot of time and energy on research.
Once I filled in the questionnaire I then downloaded the app & got my meal plan & officially started my keto weight loss journey.
Week 1 – This week was by far the hardest due to the drastic change I had to make in my diet. I personally love carbs such as bread but had to increase my fat intake whilst reducing my carbs in order to get in a state of “ketosis” which meant loading up on eggs, bacon, steak and some chicken…with the skin on of course.
Keto is great due to the fact that I can consume bacon, eggs, steaks and heavy cream without the accompanying guilt that usually follows consuming such foods.
However, it’s the transition that sucks.
It took me roughly 4 days to get into a state of ketosis at which point I experienced a state known as “keto flu” with included side effects such as nausea and unpleasant bowel movements. It took me around 2 days to get over “keto flu” as I made sure I was drinking enough water and replaced any electorates that were lost through salting some of my food.
Weeks 2 – 3 – This is when I started to get used to my diet. I must admit, eating steaks and other cuts of meat were initially great
It got a little boring and repetitive after a while, so I experimented with some other fatty cuts of meat and cooked them in various ways so even though I’d still be having the same food, it would taste different.
Week 4 – By now my body had completely adjusted to the diet and I had experienced some great physical changes. I felt lighter and had greater mental clarity.
Having done my final weigh-in I was surprised to learn that I had beaten by weight loss goal by 6 whole pounds bring my total to 14lb!
I was over the moon and really proud of myself for sticking to it for a month and crushing my initial goal.
Normally when I start a new diet I would usually have to go out my way in researching and planning my meals, however, the KetoCycle app was great as it saved me a lot of time and effort in having to plan my meals myself, including specifics on how many grams of fat and carbs to consume.
Another interesting change I noticed was that I was no longer hungry all the time. The diet greatly reduced my appetite and cravings, something which I struggled with before when it came to maintaining a healthy weight.
I also learned to be more creative in the kitchen due to only being able to eat certain foods although the app greatly helped me in this aspect.
So if you’re serious about losing weight and getting into Keto then I would wholeheartedly recommend it as it’s done wonders for my health with no long term side effects.
