Keto Diet

I Tried the Summer Body Challenge On the Keto Diet And Now I’m Beach-Ready All Year Round

Keto is something I discovered completely by accident (more on that later). Because of that, I feel like it’s important for me to share everything that I’ve learned with others.

So, I set out on a mission to document my journey.

Below, you’ll get to learn more about my plan including what I used to keep me on track and some key takeaways from my keto weight loss journey.

Perhaps this is the sign that you’re looking for?

My story

Bella D.

Weight was never an issue for me until I started to creep into my mid-30s. Aging hit me like a ton of bricks.

Throughout my life, I always tried to maintain a healthy diet with regular exercise. However, what I didn’t realize is that age started greatly impacting my metabolism – it was plummeting.

At first, I chose to ignore the obvious.

It’s just a rough patch, I thought and continued with my regular routines.

I couldn’t have been any more wrong: reducing my calories simply didn’t cut it anymore. The situation became worse and worse.

I was persistent: I restricted my intake more and more, but a couple of pounds lost couldn’t compensate for the cravings, constant hunger, and dissatisfaction caused by my diet.

After a couple of weeks, I had no energy anymore. I was running on coffee (no cream, no sugar) and salad – imagine my frustration. Getting through workouts became harder and harder.

I was disheartened, to say the least.

Nothing worked for me

Due to my interest in health & wellness, I have experimented with some other types of diets in the past, so I knew what worked for me and what didn’t.

Most diets were hard to maintain and resulted in the wrong kind of weight loss. For example, losing water and muscle instead of fat. In the end, I’d look the same even though I’d technically lost “weight”.

Some of the diets I tried included:

❌ Atkins

❌ Paleo

❌ Whole 30

These diets might work for some, but they weren’t effective for me in the long run. On the contrary, the diets induced such cravings that I actually gained more weight on top of what I was trying to lose.

This weight gain led to hormonal imbalances, which resulted in even more weight gain. I was stuck in a vicious cycle.

It seemed like whatever I did, it either had no visible results or made me gain weight. The pounds kept piling up.

Let me tell you, I almost threw in the towel. The constant battle left me exhausted.

Little did I know, my life was about to change for the better.

A friend told me about Keto

I accidentally came across an Instagram post of a dear friend of mine: she had recently posted a before and after photo, which showed the progress she achieved following a Keto diet plan.

Her post ignited something in me, so I contacted her to find out more.

She explained that she used an app called KetoCycle, which gave her a personalized meal plan to follow. This made it easier for her to stick to the diet.

It sounded intriguing, so I decided to find out more.

So, what is the Keto diet?

Keto is short for ketogenic diet, a way to eat that focuses on consuming very little carbohydrates and drastically increasing fat within your diet. This then leads to a metabolic change – your body enters the state known as ‘ketosis’.

When in ketosis, the body starts to burn fat over carbohydrates and this, according to Healthline, can lead to “significant reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels”.

How I started

My initial goal was to lose a healthy amount of around 2lbs a week which would result in around 8lbs lost at the end of the month.

First, I contacted my friend, who sent me more information on what she did to achieve her results. I decided to follow in her footsteps.

With Ketocycle, all she had to do was fill out a quiz and wait for a meal plan, which would be tailored to her. She told me that the app did most of the legwork for her when it came to planning meals and knowing exactly how many grams of fat, protein and carbs to consume.

That sounded great. I was exhausted from trying to figure out different diets. Having the planning done for me was just the peace of mind I needed.

I filled in the questionnaire, downloaded the app & got my meal plan. 1, 2, 3, easy. This marked the official beginning of my keto weight loss journey.

Week 1 – This week was by far the hardest. Starting something new and making changes is always tough, but the app kept me focused. I loved carbs (I mean, who doesn’t have a soft spot for garlic bread), but with keto I had to increase my fat intake instead.

Keto is great because I could eat bacon, eggs, steaks and enjoy heavy cream in my coffee without the accompanying guilt that usually followed consuming such foods, especially when I was restricting my calories.

After a few days, I entered ketosis – the state in which your body starts burning fat instead of carbs. This led to some short-term side effects, like fatigue and irritability, but it was nothing compared to the agitation I felt after failing yet another diet.

And after all, it meant that I was on the right track.

Weeks 2 – 3 – This is when I started to get used to my diet. I must admit, eating steaks and other cuts of meat was great. Whenever I thought I was getting bored of something, I just went into my app and experimented with different recipes.

Week 4 – By this point, my body had completely adjusted to the diet and I experienced some visible physical changes. I felt lighter, more energetic, and had greater mental clarity.

I was over the moon and really proud of myself for sticking to it for a month and losing more weight than I initially expected.

Key Takeaways

Normally, starting a new diet meant bringing out the textbooks and dedicating a huge portion of my time to meal planning. That’s one of the reasons I kept failing – I was just tired of it.

I am very happy that the KetoCycle app took this weight off of my shoulders and let me focus on other things rather than my weight loss.

I also noticed that my constant hunger disappeared. After years of calorie restriction, eating plenty of fat and protein was a breath of fresh air to my body. Shortly, my need for an afternoon sugary pick-me-up vanished.

Cutting out most of the carbs from my diet was tough, but it helped me become more creative in the kitchen. I fell in love with cooking and enjoying homemade meals. This, of course, is great for my wallet as well.

So if you’re serious about losing weight on keto, then I would wholeheartedly recommend it as it’s done wonders for me.
