“How my 6-year-old daughter’s question helped me lose weight and lower my blood pressure” (a mother’s story)

Mommy, why don’t you love me anymore?

My 6-year-old daughter Emma collapsed in the dirt, tears streaming down her face.

I caught the surprised look on my husband’s face as he stopped walking mid-stride, a hiking pole in each hand, and glanced back at me.

Emma’s question caught me completely off guard.

“What do you mean? Of course I love you, Emma.”

I stepped closer to comfort her, but she pushed me away.

“No you don’t!” she yelled, turning her face away from me as the tears came harder.

Another family in hiking gear hurried by, sneaking a brief, wide-eyed glance at us while trying to avoid eye contact, probably wondering what that horrible mother did to reduce her daughter to a sobbing, dirt-covered, snot-stained mess.

What on earth could I have done wrong to make my daughter—my pride and joy—feel like I don’t love her?

“Emma, please,” I begged. “What’s going on?”

Through her sobs she said, “You… you never come with me anymore.”

Her words hit me like a ton of bricks as I suddenly understood.

My husband and I were with Emma at the bottom of one of those outdoor staircases made of stone, the ones that have like 300 steps leading to a beautiful view at the top of a hill…

And I had just told them both to go ahead without me, that I’d be right here waiting for them when they got back.

The truth was…

I took one look at those stairs and knew I couldn’t make it to the top.

I knew if I tried, I would’ve had to stop halfway and walk back down.

That was the real reason I wasn’t going, but Emma just thought I didn’t want to be around her.

Pair that with our other disappointing summer activities… 

Like the time last week when I had to take a break from playing with Emma in the pool so I could catch my breath…

And the time before that when I had to go sit down after playing with her on the slip ‘n slide in the yard… 

And I could see how she thought I didn’t want to spend time with her.

That’s when I realized… 

If I wanted to show my daughter how much I loved her, I HAD to figure out how to get healthier.

My relationship with my daughter depended on it.

Not only that, but if I’m being honest, I was starting to get a bit worried.

Health difficulties that were minor annoyances only a few years ago had become major challenges for me.

My current situation was beginning to feel almost life-threatening to me.

At 200 pounds, I was overweight.

Being that heavy was unhealthy for my joints, awful for my blood pressure, and bad for my pancreas.

I knew I wasn’t healthy.

I wanted to be there for my daughter for as long as possible… 

To see her grow up, get married, have children. 

So as soon as my husband and Emma disappeared up that stone staircase… 

I sat down on a big rock and whipped out my phone and started Googling.

At first, the things I found weren’t promising

Keto, Atkins, Paleo, Mediterranean, smoothie cleanses… 

I’d been there, done all that.

None of those things had worked for me.

I’d also tried Weight Watchers, Noom, Nutrisystem, and exercising until I was blue in the face…

  3. Such an inspiring story! I’m using the same app too, but I typically don’t fast on Saturdays. I’m not super strict with it in terms of weekends and events, that’s why it’s taken me more than a year to lose the weight (80 lbs!), but it’s also the only reason I’ve been successful with it!
