For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted kids.
Little did I know, my fertility journey would be way more difficult than I could’ve imagined.
I am finally living the dream – largely thanks to keto. Here’s my raw and honest account of what my journey was like and how I finally succeeded.
How it all began
I was not aware of it at the time, but weight has a significant impact on fertility.
And during my 20s, I gained a bunch of it. At first, I assumed it was just part of life.
You know, living away from home, spending a lot of time studying and partying, not having the time nor the skills to cook. Things like that.
I thought that after settling down, my weight would go back to normal. However, that didn’t happen.
I wanted to lose the extra weight, I really did. I tried pretty much every diet under the sun, but I just wasn’t able to stick with any of them.
Counting calories was a nightmare for me. More extreme diets left me on the verge of exhaustion with nothing to show for it.
Eventually, I gave up and just tried to accept all the extra pounds.
Years passed, and I started experiencing other issues.
Imagine regularly calling in sick due to frequent colds and constant fatigue, which my doctor attributed to stress. My face and body – riddled with acne. The shower drain would clog with my shedding hair.
Through all of this, my weight kept creeping up for seemingly no reason.
I didn’t know it then, but all of these symptoms were related to insulin resistance.
Connecting the dots
Everything began slowly making sense after my husband and I started trying to conceive.
I went off of birth control pills and waited for my body to adjust. Weeks turned into months, and it was as if I had kissed my period goodbye.
It just wouldn’t come back.
Personally, visiting the OB-GYN terrified me. I saw one after my 21st birthday, got the BC prescription, and assumed I’d only come back in case of any issues.
Here I was a decade later, unable to get pregnant (even though my bloated belly could be easily mistaken for a baby bump).
Despite my anxiousness, the OB-GYN was very nice. After a few ultrasounds turned up clear, she explained that fertility issues were common among women with unhealthy BMIs.
She added that my hormone levels meant that conceiving would be extremely difficult, if not impossible.
I was in shock. Before I could go into a full-on panic mode, the doctor stressed the importance of losing weight.
The mechanism behind it
Apparently, my weight was the cause of many problems, including fertility.
Due to my high-carb lifestyle, I had developed insulin resistance, so just cutting down on calories wasn’t helpful in shedding the pounds.
The more I gained, the more my body rejected insulin. And because of that, I ballooned even more.
It was a vicious cycle.
To break it, the doctor recommended going low-carb – and the ketogenic diet in particular.
She explained that the ketogenic diet (keto for short) is a high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carb diet. By restricting carbs, the body is retrained to burn up fats instead.
According to her, the keto diet could help improve the performance of insulin, as well as balance out my hormones, which was necessary for a healthy pregnancy.
Not just that, but the keto diet was less invasive than IVF, which we couldn’t afford anyway.
I was eager to see for myself. This marked the beginning of my keto and fertility journey.
Getting things under control
I knew I had to step my game up. This wasn’t just about appearance anymore.
However, I was also aware of my tendency not to follow through with diets. I was scared to attempt keto on my own and fail… again. At a time when it really mattered.
I needed guidance, so I got to reading. Browsing mommy forums became my daily ritual.
Eventually, I came across a message from a woman who could’ve been my long-lost twin.
She had almost identical weight and hormone issues, insulin resistance, and struggles with fertility. After fighting for a long time, she finally managed to overcome her issues by switching to keto.
She shared that what helped her the most was an app with a personalized meal plan.
Intrigued, I read on. Apparently, the app came with a tailored plan, various recipes, and even grocery lists.
It was as if a lightbulb had gone off in my head. My struggles with conceiving were weighing heavily on my mind, so I was glad to find a solution that could take away the stress of dieting.
I immediately went and took a short quiz that the app provided. I had to choose my favorite food options, enter my age, weight, height, and even health problems.
After listing my info, I signed up for the app and found a personalized keto meal plan waiting for me.
Let me tell you, I let out a sigh of relief.
This was the first time I’d ever stuck to a lifestyle change like this.
Part of it was because my progress was quite quick. I saw results within a few weeks, which inspired me to press on.
Within 12 months, I managed to bring my BMI back from overweight to normal. Can you imagine?
I’d routinely come back in for hormone tests, and they were getting better and better. My insulin resistance improved significantly because of keto.
And the best part… After a few months on the diet, my period came back.
I have never been so happy to experience PMS again!
It’s been over a year since I began my keto weight loss journey for fertility. It’s done wonders for my hormones and insulin resistance.
When I lost the weight and my cycle normalized, I reintroduced carbs into my diet. I knew they were important for conceiving and a healthy pregnancy.
As much as I loved being on keto, it was a temporary measure to bring my BMI and hormone issues under control. And it worked!
I’m happy to say that I’m currently 5 months pregnant with a healthy baby boy!
I couldn’t be more grateful.
I have to say, though… I believe my journey would’ve been way more difficult if I didn’t have the Keto Cycle app in my pocket.
It’s just unbelievable how much it helped me stay focused and simplified my meals for me.
✅ I had 1,000+ personalized recipes to choose from that took no longer than 15–20 minutes to prepare (and there are tips on how to eat out without a hassle).
✅ I got weekly grocery lists with simple, affordable ingredients I could find at my local grocery store.
✅ I didn’t have to count calories, macros, or measure portions because they already did that for me.
✅ With healthy and tasty meals, I was full during the day, so I never felt hungry and didn’t have to rely on willpower or battle cravings.
I wish I had found this app sooner. It would’ve saved me a lot of tears and heartache.
