How I Picked Up Running And Lost Weight Before My 50th Birthday

Honestly, I was ready to call it quits. 

After trying and failing every single diet and exercise program under the Sun, all I wanted to do was raise a white flag and admit defeat. 

I was sick of getting my hopes up only to have them torn down again and end up looking in the mirror with tears running down my eyes seeing what I had become. 

I was 49, heavily overweight and out of breath every time I had to take a flight of stairs. And most of all – I was miserable. But all of that changed when I found a running program perfect for beginners and both literally and figuratively started running my life again. 

My name is Susan, I am 50 and in better shape than I was in my thirties! Not only can I fit in my favorite jeans from 15 years back, but I’ve never been happier, more confident, and energetic than now. Oh, and did I mention I now enjoy starting my mornings with a 5K run? 

A painful reflection

Unfortunately, this hadn’t always been the case. Just a year ago I was overweight, couldn’t stand my own reflection, and frankly did not see the light at the end of this depression tunnel. 

I was deathly afraid of running into anyone I hadn’t seen in a while, but not as afraid as I was of actual running. Or any sort of physical exercise for that matter. Just taking a set of stairs seemed like a daunting challenge, which ended in me having to catch my breath for 5 minutes before I could actually do anything. 

With the pandemic giving me an easy pass to sit in my robe all day and eat everything and anything my heart desired, I was going down a slippery slope. I refused to go on the scale, dreading the harsh reality of what I had become. 

After taking the stairs one day, I felt completely out of breath and started hyperventilating. I felt truly scared that this was what my life had become.

That was it. Something had to change. I had to change. I had two kids, a loving husband, and a life I was not willing to give up on yet. I was only 49 with a long life ahead of me! And I was going to make the most of it no matter what!

Time for change

I had no idea where to start, as I had previously tried and failed countless diet and exercise routines that just didn’t suit my body and lifestyle. I knew I wasn’t going to succeed on a restrictive diet as they’d always end up in me binging all of my favorite foods and feeling horrible about myself. Nothing like chubby thighs, some back fat and saggy breasts to make one lose all the confidence they’ve ever had.  

I was not at a point where I could’ve picked up my workout bag and hit the gym for some high intensity group training either. I was not ready to face the judgy looks of people in perfect shape. Of course I could’ve just searched Youtube and got started with some home workout videos, but that was just it – I would’ve started and fallen off the waggon as I had so many times before. 

I needed a plan that would keep me accountable and give me structure. I had been notorious for starting exercise programs and then falling off the waggon as soon as I felt the slightest bit unmotivated.  

So I went down a rabbit hole of Googling different exercise programs that could actually work for ME. That meant excluding all of the one-size-fits-all types of programs and looking for something that would take into account my personal fitness level, lifestyle, schedule, health and goals. 

There was a solution perfect for me

After a bit of scrolling and research I stumbled upon a running app called Joggo. It wasn’t anything I’d ever heard of, but reading the description and seeing the results other people my age had been able to achieve, I had a feeling this just might be the solution I’d so desperately been yearning for.

That said, I still had my doubts if I was going to be able to stick to the plan…

Hitting the starting line

After calculating my answers, I was signed to the beginner level, and received my very own, personal running routine, which really did take my lifestyle and daily routines into consideration. 

Considering how personalized the program was, I knew I’d have a really hard time coming up with excuses on why I wouldn’t be able to follow it. This was what gave me the encouragement I needed to believe that this time will be different and I will be able to stick to the plan.

 It was time to take accountability and take my health and life into my own hands. I was ready to put on my running shoes and get started with the program. 

A few obstacles in the way

As much as I was ready to turn my life around and I had found the perfect app to help me do that, the rest was in my hands, or should I say feet now. As I’d never ran before I was terrified of injuring or overexerting myself. 

Luckily, the Joggo app offered educational articles to ease my worries. They covered everything from what to wear down to the benefits running can have on one’s mental health. Best of all, it wasn’t just something I could’ve Googled myself – these were tips and tricks by an actual running coach, which made me feel like I’d basically hired a personal trainer. 

Whenever I felt discouraged and started coming up with excuses to skip a run, I focused on the feeling I’d have after a run. Runners high truly is a thing and on the days I had my morning run, I’d be enjoying that high for the rest of the day as well. 

So I started running 4 times a week and at first it was just 1K in the morning before getting started with the rest of my day. To avoid injuries, I was adamant about doing all the warm up and cool down exercises the program taught me. 

Seeing the results

It didn’t take long for me to start seeing the results. No, I didn’t lose 30 lb in the first week and if any program ever suggests that you will, the only running you need to do is as far away from that program as possible!

The first results I actually saw were the results on my mental health. Already after the very first run I felt a sense of accomplishment and a huge energy boost! I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for the rest of the day as I knew I’d done something for myself and my body first thing in the morning. And I had a bit of soreness in my muscles to prove it!

I was hesitant to hit the scale after the first week of running. I knew it would take time to see a huge difference in the number and I’d have to stay patient, but I couldn’t help but hope that I’d lost at least a little bit of weight. 

And boy was I excited to see the number on the scale! I couldn’t believe it! After doing my running routine for a week and eating according to my seriously yummy meal plan without ever feeling restricted, I’d lost 3.5 lb! 

Well, if this wasn’t the push I needed to keep going, I don’t know what is!

Reaping the rewards

Getting up in the morning to go for my run started getting easier and easier. 

As weeks went by, it had become as natural as brushing my teeth in the morning. Slowly but surely my endurance increased and after a month I was upgraded to the intermediate level. I was ready for longer runs and couldn’t get enough of that post-run high!

I wasn’t the only one enjoying the results of my new found lifestyle. My kids and husband said they’d never seen me so happy and confident. No wonder – I was able to wear clothes I couldn’t fit into for the last decade and taking the stairs had become as easy as blinking my eyes.

I couldn’t believe I had put off making this change for such a long time, but I was ecstatic that I had finally done it! 

It was like the weight of the world had been lifted off my shoulders. And according to the scale, there sure was some truth to it. Within 4 months, I’d lost about 30 lb of fat and gained the same amount of confidence!

By the time my 50th birthday came around, I had reached my goal weight of 145 lb. I couldn’t remember the last birthday that I felt this energetic, confident, healthy, and excited about the future! Joggo had given me the best gift I could’ve ever asked for – it had given back my joy for life and I truly felt that for the first time in a long time, I was finally running my own life!
