How I Managed My PCOS Symptoms and Lost Weight With Keto

Without knowing, I struggled with my weight, insulin resistance, and a bunch of other PCOS symptoms for years.

It left me disheartened and thinking I was losing control.

Now I feel like myself again – largely thanks to keto. Here’s my raw and honest account of what my journey was like and how I managed my PCOS symptoms and lost weight.

How it all began

During my mid-twenties, I started rapidly gaining weight. 

“Well, that’s new,” I thought, looking at myself in the mirror.

Since I had been quite skinny up to that point, at first, I was excited about getting curvier.

I was in for a rude awakening. The curves turned into flab real fast.

My friends and family were puzzled – was I secretly eating junk?

The thing is… no. Throughout those years, my diet had stayed consistent.

Then why was I getting big so quickly?

The scale started giving me nightmares. So I went on a diet. 

I tried pretty much every diet under the sun, but I just wasn’t able to stick with any of them. 

The grapefruit diet, the Atkins diet, juice cleanses, fasting. You name it – I tried it.

However, most of these diets left me on the verge of exhaustion with nothing to show for it. 

Eventually, I gave up and just tried to accept all the extra pounds. In time, my BMI crossed the line between “normal” and “overweight.”

But it didn’t end there…

Years passed, and I started experiencing other issues. 

Imagine regularly calling in sick due to headaches and other pains, which the doctors attributed to stress. Or, even worse, my weight.

My face and body – riddled with acne. The shower drain would clog with my shedding hair.

Through all of this, my weight kept creeping up for seemingly no reason. 

I was disheartened. It felt like my body was failing me.

The cause of my problems

A couple of years into all of this, and after seeing multiple doctors, I eventually got my diagnosis.

PCOS.

I thought it was impossible! My periods were more or less regular.

However, what I didn’t know was that the levels of androgens in my blood were too high, and I also had multiple cysts on my ovaries…

Along with PCOS, I had developed insulin resistance, so just cutting down on calories wasn’t helpful in shedding the pounds. 

The more I gained, the more my body rejected insulin. And because of that, I ballooned even more. 

It was a vicious cycle…

To break it, my OB-GYN recommended going low-carb – and the ketogenic diet in particular.

She explained that the ketogenic diet (keto for short) is a high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carb diet. By restricting carbs, the body is retrained to burn up fats instead.

According to her, the keto diet could help improve the performance of insulin, as well as balance out my hormones, which would help reduce the symptoms of PCOS.

A glimmer of hope

I knew I had to get it together. I wasted most of my 20s being exhausted, miserable, and feeling way older than I actually was. I vowed to put an end to this.

However, I was skeptical of trying yet another diet. I was afraid to attempt keto on my own and fail… one more time. 

I needed guidance, so I turned to PCOS support forums.

Eventually, I came across a message from a woman who could’ve been my long-lost twin. 

She had almost identical weight and hormone issues, as well as insulin resistance. After fighting for a long time, she finally managed her symptoms with keto.

Final thoughts
