I get this question all the time! 

Yes, you absolutely can, and you should.  Physical activity is a big part of a well-designed diabetes management plan. But there’s a catch. 

When we get older, our hormones change and our metabolism slows down. So the exercises we do and the foods we eat need to change too. 

Many people worry that this means they have to work extra hard to lose weight and improve their health. But that’s not strictly true.

We can just make smarter diet and exercise choices instead. 

I’ve personally worked with people of all ages. People who were 50, 60, and yes, even 70 and beyond.

“What diet will get me ready for the beach the quickest?”

Let’s get one thing out of the way: Diabetes complicates dieting. But it’s possible to lose weight effectively whether you’re prediabetic, Type 2, or even Type 1.

If sugar or carb cravings come banging at your door… get up and go! Literally walk away from your home.

Take a walk around the block for 5 to 10 minutes. That’s step 1. 

Step 2 is that you should drink 3 to 4 full glasses of water when you’re back… and wait 10 more minutes. This is important because dehydration causes cravings.

On top of that, all this water will make you feel fuller.

Lastly, and if your cravings persist… Here comes step 3: Give in. But only a little. 

Eat a bit of what you’re craving. Maybe a cookie or half a candy bar. You’ve earned it. 

This way, you won’t feel deprived or super restricted. And this can go a long way in sustaining your motivation over the long term. 

I don’t mean to sound repetitive, but a personalized diabetes-optimized meal plan would also work great for silencing these cravings.

  • Hip thrust. 
  • Bodyweight squat.
  • Donkey kicks.
