How A ‘Family Diet’ Helped Me Drop The Pounds While Keeping My Kids & Hubby Healthy

Nicole, 37, shares the inspiring story of how she ditched fad diets and got her family on board with healthy eating

I felt like a short order cook. It seemed like everyone in the house wanted something different…

And I drew the short straw every single time…

I’d be sitting there picking at a dull salad, with just a tiny drizzle of dressing. While my family wolfed down their over-processed, calorie-laden foods…

The two kids with their chicken nuggets… fries… full plates of beige…

And my hubby with a big bowl of pasta swimming in cheesy sauce…

I knew what I was giving them wasn’t healthy. But when I served anything else, I couldn’t deal with the tantrums (and not just from the kids!). I just didn’t have the time or energy to make us all different meals from scratch.

So I’d be there eating my salad, doing my best to ignore temptation, trying to imagine I was really eating the pasta!

The worst part was when it came time for dessert…

I’d given myself a ‘two spoon rule.’ Otherwise the jealousy was overwhelming! I’d have a couple of teaspoons of dessert in the kitchen before I served the family. But it still didn’t make the situation much better. I’d have to watch my hubby and kids enjoying their chocolate pudding, when I’d barely even had a taste!

I couldn’t blame them, I knew first hand how unappetizing healthy foods could be…

I’d been trying to hit my ideal weight for years. And I’d tried every diet trend going…

Paleo… Whole30… Elimination diets to deal with cravings…

And, of course, nobody else in the family wanted in on these highly restrictive diets.

(Plus, I wasn’t even sure if they were healthy for kids anyway…)

But in the back of my mind I was always concerned about what I was serving my family… Wondering what it was doing to their development…

Then one day, my 5 year old daughter asked me a question… A question that made me realize something had to change…

“Mommy, how come you never eat what we eat?”

worried

My heart sunk…

The question was completely innocent… But I couldn’t offer an innocent answer…

My kids are 5 and 7 – they didn’t know what a diet was, nor did I want them to!!!

I wanted my kids to develop body confidence and grow up to be happy and healthy…

I swore to myself there and then…

I was going to get the whole family eating the same meals…

And those meals were going to be healthy

For the next few weeks I started buying good quality food… spending time preparing it… agonizing over menus… then watching half of it go in the trash!

It was driving me nuts…

The kids were constantly begging for unhealthy snacks…

(I remember one time my daughter came down for dinner with her mouth and tongue stained luminous blue… She must have had some candy hidden away!!!)

I felt like I needed to be Einstein just to work out calories for the family meals!!!

I was close to giving up and going back to ready meals…

Until one morning, I bumped into a friend in the veggie isle of the supermarket… She had been in one of the diet clubs I’d been part of…

She caught me picking up a zucchini – she smiled and said…

“How’s that healthy thing going for you?”

At first I hardly recognized her… She must have dropped at least 30 pounds…

I had to comment on how great she looked…

That’s when she told me she’d been on a ‘family diet’…

Although it wasn’t really a diet at all…

She’d managed to change the eating habits of her whole family. And she’d lost weight in the process. Without any new fads or yo-yo dieting…

I had to admit to her that her situation was the dream for me… But I’d tried to do the same and all it was doing was costing me money and making me stressed.

That’s when she told me about PerfectBody, a diet plan app she was using…

She started scrolling through some pictures on her phone of meals she’d made for her family… They looked exciting and colorful… And, most of all, tasty! Not like diet food at all.

She told me that the app meant the meals were all planned out for her by chefs and nutritionists…

She admitted she was no chef, but said the meals were quick and easy to prepare… And shopping for the right stuff was simple… She was even saving money by following the shopping lists from the app…

And what’s more, she could tell the app which foods each family member didn’t like, so she knew there wouldn’t be any tantrums at the dinner table

She told me her kids had become better behaved since eating these healthy meals. Since they weren’t taking in all kinds of chemical ingredients…

And, of course, there was the huge bonus that she’d managed to lose all this weight by removing temptation from the dinner table…

I knew I had to try the app out for myself…

PerfectBody, the simple app that acts like a family nutritionist…

Family

I downloaded the app and took the quiz on my family’s diet preferences. When I received the recipes, I already had the ingredients to make a few of them. So I started serving them to my family later that week…

I have to admit, when I first started, the kids still protested slightly… But, here’s the key…

I solved this by letting them choose the meals themselves…

And I’m still using that technique 3 months on…

I just let them scroll through the recipes on the app, and I cook whatever they like the look of… I’m happy to do that, as I know everything on there is healthy (with no ingredients anyone in our house dislikes)… And the kids never get bored because there are hundreds of recipes available…

Even better, the recipes are so simple that the kids get involved in the kitchen! So mealtime’s gone from stressful to a fun family occasion…

The plans include breakfast, lunch and dinner… They even include healthy snacks and desserts… So I’ve managed to switch out all the junk food everyone was snacking on…

(Nowadays, I even get to enjoy dessert with the family… And I’m not talking just 2 teaspoons full!)

I’ve already lost 23 pounds since starting with PerfectBody. And it hasn’t been tough, because it’s not a fad diet… It’s a healthy way of living…

But the best part is – I know my kids are eating healthily… And, most of all, getting a healthy mindset towards body image.
