How Getting Back On The Bike Improved My Quality Of Life

I always had this tranquil image of what the perfect life looked like.

A beautiful family, a caring husband, and a healthy lifestyle. And for a while, I had all of those things.

But here I am. Sat on the couch, my big belly hanging out from beneath my top, divorced, and my children on opposite sides of the world.

Now, this isn’t some single mom sob story. Quite the opposite in fact.

Let me rewind.

My name is Linda, I am a single mom living in San Francisco.

When I was younger, I seemed to be one of those annoying people who could eat and eat, but stayed looking fit and healthy – annoying I know.

Things used to be so simple then, not having to constantly watch weight and monitor calories.

My children seemed to follow in my footsteps, they have huge appetites, but are still beautiful, fit young women.

We had a great life, all living together with my then-husband in our idyllic little home.

When the children were born, I decided to leave my job so I could spend as much time with them as possible. My husband earned good money, and we agreed it would be the best way forward.

As the kids grew older, I had always mulled over the thought of getting back to work. The extra income could really go a long way, and I wanted to get back into the working world.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen – and my world was turned upside down.

My youngest daughter was diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression, which led to her taking extended time off school.

I very quickly squashed my ambitions of returning to work and focused all my attention on my daughter.

During this period, I found myself worrying non-stop. The only comfort I could find was junk food.

I am not by any stretch of the imagination, trying to shift the blame off myself. This was on me, and me only.

I would scoff my face with chocolate, chips, takeout – you name it, I ate it.

My existence just all evolved around food, and large amounts of it.

Thankfully for our family, our daughter started to improve, with a few setbacks along the way.

I was so proud. As any mother would be.

Selfishly, I saw this as a way to get my health and work aspirations back on track. I could ditch the unhealthy lifestyle and start feeling myself again.

But life has a habit of kicking you when you’re down.

Before my daughter flew off to start her new life and education in London, my husband wanted a serious talk.

He explained to me how I’d really ‘let myself go’ and he couldn’t recognize the woman I used to be – I felt betrayed.

All of this was used to justify his unfaithfulness.

I was mortified. Crushed. Let down by the man I loved.

After months of turmoil, he left. Moving in with his new girlfriend.

After my daughter had recovered, this just seemed so unfair.

We had all these aspirations many years ago, of traveling together, having a good life for us, and futures for our children.

For months, I sat at home feeling sorry for myself. My eating got worse and worse.

I couldn’t see a viable way out of this mess. Any aspirations to return to work had long gone.

I’d often slump around the house, trying to psyche myself up to make changes.

But all it took was one glimpse of myself in the mirror, and I’d sink back into my defeated state of mind. Stuck this way for the rest of my life.

Even on those rare days where I felt an urge to get better, I would browse the internet and try any diet I could.

But this just resulted in feeble excuses for why I could not go see it through.

I tried the Atkins Diet, Paleo Diet, even fasting at times. But they were complex for me, I just kept offering up excuses.

After being knocked down so many times and keeping myself shut away, I had lost contact with so many friends. Most of them didn’t even reach out after my divorce.

But one afternoon, there was a knock at the door – something I usually just associated with a takeaway.

There stood everything I wanted to be.

My friend Sandra was a couple of years older than me, but she didn’t look it.

She looked amazing – almost how I imagined myself looking at this age, all those years ago.

We embraced each other, as she apologized for not coming here sooner – not that I blame her!

She too was recently divorced, but I couldn’t see any of the weight gain on her that I’d subjected myself to.

I was almost too ashamed to look her in the eye. I felt like she was looking me up and down in disgust.

She wasn’t, your brain just thinks that way when you don’t respect yourself.

We sat, not talking about the elephant in the room (me) for a few minutes.

I had to ask her.

“How have you stayed so skinny?”

She told me that we weren’t all that different. Life had her down in the dumps, but she kept herself motivated and discovered this app that gave her a new lease of life.

We spoke openly and honestly about our burdens for a good hour. I felt like someone had my back.

I didn’t have to do this alone.

We reminisced about our long bike trips around the parks and how great those days were.

Well let me tell you, I am so glad we did.

Cycling is what picked her up from her lowest, and helped her keep a routine.

Like me, she loved cycling. So much so that she hunted for a weight loss plan that was centered around a bike.

I felt a little glimmer of hope on my body, for the first time in what felt like an eternity.

She showed me this neat little app called Cycling Diet.

When I closed the door behind Sandra that afternoon, I felt rejuvenated.

I sat back down with my phone and started checking out Cycling Diet for myself.

I had a few reservations. I wasn’t particularly well off following the divorce. Could I afford to sacrifice my money on an app I’d never used before?

But I decided you can’t put a price on your health. Hell, if I stopped spending money on daily takeaways, I could afford a better quality of life.

I was a little overwhelmed, to begin with. But I proceeded on with a short quiz about my health, cycling ability, and food habits.

I found it best to be brutally honest, or your results aren’t going to be as accurate.

I realized when filling out the quiz, I didn’t even have a bike for the outside world anymore! Just some dusty old exercise bike my dear husband left behind.

But the app can work with exercise bikes too, so you can use it at home – amazing!

Part of me thought long and hard about going down the stay-at-home-option, I had an exercise bike – albeit one I hadn’t used in years.

Amazingly, CyclingDiet can be done from the comfort of your own home, using any exercise bike.

So if you feel a little embarrassed about cycling with the masses, they have you covered!

But I decided to buy myself a cheap mountain bike, so Sandra and I could go together.

What really gave me that extra kick up the backside, was seeing when I could reach my target weight. I was impatient to get going!

I woke up the next morning to another ring at the door – no it isn’t a takeaway – but the new bike I decided to treat myself to.

The big moment then came.

I opened the app and fired up my new tailored cycling plan.

I cannot tell you how good it felt to be back on my bike. Any fears I had were soon washed away by the expert guidance on hand.

So here we are.

I initially signed up for a 3-month cycling plan out of caution. I couldn’t be sure it would work for me the same way it worked for Sandra.

After a few weeks, I started to feel a bit achy – a sign of progress – but this soon disappeared, and I was starting to see the results, slowly but surely.

I feel healthier in my mind, body, and soul. My beaming smile has returned, and my desires and aspirations are now at the forefront of my mind.

I recently started a new job in marketing, and even decided to get back into the dating game.

I am happy again.

Taking a short quiz may be all that lays in your way at the moment.  The information you enter on there will take no more than 2 minutes, and could save you a lifetime.

The journey has been tough, but you don’t have to go it alone.

Thanks to a bit of support from a friend and the wonderful Cycling Diet plan, I am now living life to the fullest.

Whether I am set up on the exercise bike at home, in my little garage, or riding through the park with Sandra,  I know I am getting the best experience for ME.

I hope this can encourage people to take action as I did. It’s never too late.
